I. Design Challenges and Limitations of MV Switchgear Insulation Components

In Medium Voltage switchgear products (24/40.5 kV), contact boxes and wall bushings are core insulation components. Their fundamental function is to safely and reliably lead high-voltage conductors through a grounded barrier. These components must possess extremely high lightning impulse withstand voltage and power frequency withstand voltage to ensure the operational safety of the switchgear.

However, as demand for miniaturization and compact design in switchgear increases, achieving high-voltage insulation within limited geometric spaces has become a core conflict in design. In the structural design of an insulation bushing, if the clearance is too small, or if there are sharp corners or prominent hardware on the surface (such as the serrated tips formed by CNC punching in mounting holes), it easily leads to excessive local electric stress on the insulating body.

In traditional or simplified insulation structures, this localized high stress is prone to cause breakdown during power frequency withstand voltage tests. Even if a new product passes factory testing, its long-term operation still carries the risk of breakdown due to insulation material aging and defect accumulation, ultimately leading to serious accidents.

II. Principles of Capacitance Graded Bushings

Capacitance graded bushings (also known as capacitance equipotential shielded busbar bushings) are the key technology for solving the structural electric stress concentration problem mentioned above. The principle is to utilize capacitance voltage division by placing multiple layers of conductive or semi-conductive material within the thickness of the insulation layer. These shields are designed as built-in capacitors, with the innermost layer connected to the high-voltage conductor and the outermost layer connected to the cabinet ground.

This design effectively equalizes and controls the electric stress both within the insulation layer and on its surface. Through precise control of the electric field, capacitance grading technology not only significantly improves the dielectric strength of the insulator but also effectively reduces the size and diameter of the bushing.

III. Necessity and Core Value of Capacitance Graded Bushings

Necessity and Safety

Capacitance grading technology is the key enabler for achieving extreme miniaturization and enhanced high reliability in medium voltage switchgear. Practical experience shows that for 24 kV bushings and contact boxes, stress grading shielding is already widely adopted. For 40.5 kV and higher voltage bushings, configuring a shielding net is recognized as best practice/is highly recommended to ensure long-term operational safety.

Core Value: Miniaturization and Functional Integration

The precise electric field shielding provided by capacitance grading is not only essential for guaranteeing insulation safety but is also a critical foundation for achieving high-low voltage functional integration.

Taking the US standard 38 kV switchgear contact box as an example, only by using capacitance equipotential shielding can the component meet the 38 kV insulation requirement while achieving a small diameter of 190 mm. This design safely allows for the installation of low-voltage through-type Current Transformers (CT) with a lower power frequency withstand voltage (3 kV, impulse withstand 10 kV) at the front of the contact box. By utilizing grounded shielding, this technology perfectly achieves functional requirements, meets insulation performance, and ensures small size, easy installation, and multi-objective performance.

IV. Conclusion: The Cornerstone of Reliability in the Era of Miniaturization

Capacitance grading technology is the fundamental solution for MV switchgear to meet stringent safety standards while addressing the challenge of miniaturization. By integrating complex electric field control within the component, it effectively resolves the unavoidable local high-stress risks found in traditional structures. For 24 kV and 40.5 kV bushings, especially those requiring the highest performance in compact spaces, capacitance grading is an advanced and highly effective technical approach. Therefore, this technology is a core embodiment of modern high-reliability, compact MV switchgear design.
