Common Types of GIS Operating Mechasnisms
Electric Operating Mechanism: Achieves energy storage (e.g., spring charging) and subsequent switching operations (closing or opening) through an integrated electric motor. This is essential for remote control and automated system operation.
Three-Position Switch Operating Mechanism: This mechanism is typically used for gas insulated switchgear components like disconnector or LBS switch and provides three distinct functional positions:
Closed (making the circuit).
Open (isolating the circuit).
Earthed/Grounded (safely connecting the circuit to ground). It is usually equipped with an automatic transfer device to manage the switch position in case of an electric motor power failure.
Manual Operating Mechanism: Permits direct, non-powered operation by the operator (e.g., using a crank or handle). This function is available for critical operations primarily when the system is de-energized, stopped, or under maintenance lockout.
